Respirators and Dust Masks
Dust, fumes, vapours and fibres cause lung disease that often only shows years later. Silicosis and other occupational lung diseases remain a serious problem in South Africa. The right respirator or dust mask, fitted properly, prevents it. Request a quote for disposable masks, reusable respirators, filters and cartridges below.
Disposable dust masks
Disposable filtering facepiece masks are graded by filtering efficiency. FFP1 masks suit low levels of nuisance dust. FFP2 masks protect against moderate dust, such as cement, wood and drywall sanding. FFP3 masks give the highest protection for hazardous dusts such as silica, asbestos removal under supervision and some pharmaceuticals. In South Africa these masks are tested to SANS 50149. Valved masks are cooler to wear, and moulded cup masks hold their shape better than flat-fold masks.
Half mask and full face respirators
Reusable half mask respirators use replaceable filters and cartridges, which makes them more economical for daily use. Particulate filters stop dust and mist, while gas and vapour cartridges are colour-coded for organic vapours, acid gases, ammonia and combinations. Full face respirators add eye protection and a higher protection factor for chemical spraying, fumigation and paint shops. Powered air-purifying respirators and supplied air systems are used in confined spaces and high-exposure work. Welding helmets with respirators combine both in one unit.
Fit testing, filters and prices
A respirator only works if it seals. Hazardous chemical and lead regulations in South Africa expect employers to select the right respirator and make sure it fits, which is usually confirmed with a fit test. Facial hair breaks the seal. Change particulate filters when breathing gets harder and gas cartridges on a set schedule. Respirator and dust mask prices depend on protection level and volume. Disposable masks are usually sold in boxes of 10 to 20.
How to choose a respirators and dust masks supplier
Price matters, but the cheapest price is not always the best value. When you receive your respirators and dust masks quote, check:
- Certification – ask which South African (SANS) or international standards the products meet, and request test certificates for large orders.
- Stock and lead times – a supplier who holds stock locally can replace damaged or wrong-sized items quickly.
- Total cost – look at the price including delivery, branding and VAT, not only the unit price.
- After-sales service – find out about exchanges, warranties and whether the supplier can set up an account for repeat orders.
Our service matches your request with a supplier who stocks certified products, so you can check these points before you commit. It costs nothing and you are under no obligation to accept the quote.

To get accurate prices quickly, include:

- Disposable masks (FFP1, FFP2, FFP3) or reusable respirators
- Filter and cartridge types and quantities
- Whether you need fit testing for your workers
Frequently asked questions
- Which dust mask is best for cement and silica dust?
- FFP2 is the minimum for cement dust. For crystalline silica from cutting, grinding or drilling, FFP3 or a half mask with P3 filters is recommended.
- How long does a respirator cartridge last?
- It depends on concentration, humidity and breathing rate. Follow the manufacturer's change schedule, and replace immediately if you smell or taste the contaminant.
