Conti suits and boiler suits

The 2-piece conti suit (jacket and trousers) is the most popular style in South Africa because the top and bottom can be replaced separately and sized independently. One-piece boiler suits give full coverage with no gap at the waist and suit mechanics, painters and plant operators. Both come in polycotton and 100% cotton, in navy, royal blue, green, khaki, red, orange and white. Reflective tape on arms and legs is a common upgrade for night shift and outdoor work.

Flame-retardant and acid-resistant overalls

Where there is a risk of fire, sparks, molten metal or electrical arc flash, ordinary polycotton can melt or ignite. Flame-retardant overalls are made from treated cotton or inherently flame-resistant fibres that self-extinguish. Many South African ranges combine flame and acid resistance in a single fabric, often sold as "D59" flame and acid conti suits, for petrochemical, mining and electrical work. Ask suppliers to confirm the standard each garment is tested to, especially for arc flash ratings.

Sizing, branding and prices

Overalls are usually sized by chest size for jackets (for example 30 to 60) and waist size for trousers. Order a size run with a few spares in common sizes. Embroidery or screen printing of company logos, names and back prints is widely available. Overall prices depend on fabric weight, cotton content, flame and acid treatment and the number of garments. Bulk and annual contract orders bring the price per suit down considerably.

How to choose a overalls supplier

Price matters, but the cheapest price is not always the best value. When you receive your overalls quote, check:

  • Certification – ask which South African (SANS) or international standards the products meet, and request test certificates for large orders.
  • Stock and lead times – a supplier who holds stock locally can replace damaged or wrong-sized items quickly.
  • Total cost – look at the price including delivery, branding and VAT, not only the unit price.
  • After-sales service – find out about exchanges, warranties and whether the supplier can set up an account for repeat orders.

Our service matches your request with a supplier who stocks certified products, so you can check these points before you commit. It costs nothing and you are under no obligation to accept the quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is a conti suit?
Conti suit is the South African name for a two-piece work overall: a jacket and matching trousers, usually in polycotton or cotton.
Do flame-retardant overalls lose protection when washed?
Inherently flame-resistant fabrics keep their protection for life. Treated cotton keeps its rating for a stated number of washes. Follow the label.
